Multi-model simulations of aerosol and ozone radiative forcing for the period 1990-2015
نویسندگان
چکیده
Over the past decades, the geographical distribution of emissions of substances that alter the atmospheric energy balance has changed due to economic growth and pollution regulations. Here, we show the resulting changes to aerosol and ozone abundances and their radiative forcing, using recently updated emission data for the period 19902015, as simulated by seven global atmospheric composition models. The models broadly reproduce the large-scale changes in surface aerosol and ozone based on observations (e.g., -1 to -3%/yr in aerosols over US and Europe). The 30 global mean radiative forcing due to ozone and aerosols changes over the 1990-2015 period increased by about +0.2 Wm, with approximately 1/3 due to ozone. This increase is stronger positive than reported in IPCC AR5. The main Atmos. Chem. Phys. Discuss., doi:10.5194/acp-2016-594, 2016 Manuscript under review for journal Atmos. Chem. Phys. Multi-model simulations of aerosol and ozone radiative forcing due to anthropogenic emission changes during the period 1990–2015
Over the past few decades, the geographical distribution of emissions of substances that alter the atmospheric energy balance has changed due to economic growth and air pollution regulations. Here, we show the resulting changes to aerosol and ozone abundances and their radiative forcing using recently updated emission data for the period 1990–2015, as simulated by seven global atmospheric compo...
متن کاملGlobal radiative forcing of coupled tropospheric ozone and aerosols in a unified general circulation model
[1] Global simulations of sea salt and mineral dust aerosols are integrated into a previously developed unified general circulation model (GCM), the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) GCM II0, that simulates coupled tropospheric ozone-NOxhydrocarbon chemistry and sulfate, nitrate, ammonium, black carbon, primary organic carbon, and secondary organic carbon aerosols. The fully coupled ga...
متن کاملStratospheric sulfur and its implications for radiative forcing simulated by the chemistry climate model EMAC
Multiyear simulations with the atmospheric chemistry general circulation model EMAC with a microphysical modal aerosol module at high vertical resolution demonstrate that the sulfur gases COS and SO2, the latter from low-latitude and midlatitude volcanic eruptions, predominantly control the formation of stratospheric aerosol. Marine dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and other SO2 sources, including strong...
متن کاملThe Response of the South Asian Summer Monsoon to Temporal and Spatial Variations in Absorbing Aerosol Radiative Forcing
Previous studies on the response of the South Asian summer monsoon to the direct radiative forcing caused by anthropogenic absorbing aerosols have emphasized the role of premonsoonal aerosol forcing. This study examines the roles of aerosol forcing in both preand postonset periods using the Community Earth SystemModel, version 1.0.4, with the CommunityAtmosphereModel, version 4. Simulations wer...
متن کاملThe present-day and future impact of NOx emissions from subsonic aircraft on the atmosphere in relation to the impact of NOx surface sources
The eect of present-day and future NOx emissions from aircraft on the NOx and ozone concentrations in the atmosphere and the corresponding radiative forcing were studied using a three-dimensional chemistry transport model (CTM) and a radiative model. The eects of the aircraft emissions were compared with the eects of the three most important anthropogenic NOx surface sources: road trac, ele...
